Ronnie
My issues run deep. I was pushed out of my role as a VP. 2010 has been the worst year of my life. It's amazing that when your 'up' there people want to know you, people who don't even know you want to know you. Then when your out, people turn their backs on you. Some surprise you more than others. So, not only have i been kciked in the gut by my ex employers, then to get treated like muck by 'friends/colleagues...even family!' is just heart breaking. The good thing it teaches you not to trust any one and to always watch your back. And that people never like to hear that your doing well, but are all ears when your 'OUT'. But i got through it as im a strong person. I still don't have a job and pray that god helps me. Reading the other stories, i can understand as i've been there. At one point, i nearly gave up altogether and my health was failing. But i pulled my self together quick smart. There are still days when i get upset being out of work, but rather letting it linger and ruin my day, im quick to snap out it by the thought that one day i will get a job one day. I wish every one the best of luck. It's painful but there are lessons learnt and you find your inner strength.

Understood Taskin. Luckily there are plenty of good sites for politics out there. FYI...I used to have other blogs where I did discuss politics. But for this one, people seem to mostly want job search and interview help. I wish you all the best!

Taskin...I couldn't have said it better.

I wish there were something I could say to help you feel better; I know how awful it must feel to keep trying your best and still not have a job. Unfortunately, as more and more people turn to volunteer work, even those opportunities are hard to find. But they are out there!

As for the cost of classes...I totally get that. But you can always decide to teach yourself something from a book or online. It's a great thing to keep your spirits up and also gain new skills. The library has free books (and sometimes classes) and the internet has lots of great information. (I have friend who is making a good living now from something he taught himself after he was let go.) All you have to provide is the desire and initiative. While I know that's hard when you're depressed, you only need to start - one small step at a time.

As for finding opportunities... networking is always your best job search ally - now more than ever. So is the determination not to let this stop you even if at home you feel the frustration.

This is a time to forget the numbers and just focus on finding that one place (you only need one to kick-start your comeback) where you can at least get some temp work or maybe in the meantime volunteer... while still looking for full-time work of course. Just so you know I have an MBA and a few times when I was out of work I answered phones as a temp...just to get myself in the door. And I even got job offers out of it!

And I've also been known to look for places to pitch some part-time work to and have found a few takers over the years. Reading about local companies or talking to people in your neighborhood can spark creative ideas. Jobs come from the most unexpected sources sometimes.

Again...I am really sorry that this is a time when too many talented people like you are out of work. But we're in your corner. Please don't give up! And remember to check your resume and cover letters to make sure you've done all you can.

Best of luck! And we're here, Taskin, if you just need to tell us how it's going.

Hi i've been out of work for over four months and it is killing me! there are days when im positive, but more than most i get very depressed. The problem is, voluntary work is hard to come by as every one is doing it! Trying to do new courses is difficult as it costs money. what i don't understand is, the govt has decided to cut down the public sector and yet bonuses are being dished out to those who created this mess in the first place!

GREAT example, Lane. Keep that energy going. You can turn up a lead almost anywhere. I once found a lead to a lead at a BBQ from a total stranger to whom I just pleasantly (conversationally) mentioned my desire to change fields. (And it got me to a job.)

Good luck!

Hi Ronnie Ann,

Just recommended your site to someone I met at a networking group . Also, this person gave me the name of a center for women who are unemployed in my area that I didn't even know about. They have classes and a job bank. So, like you say, you never know what you might discover.

Thanks for your support!

Those are great ideas, Lane. Networking is about a lot more than networking groups. Some of the best networking happens when you are doing things you care about.

And I too have gotten a lot out of volunteering during these times - even friends (or friends of friends) who later wound up being a link to a job - not that this was my goal when I volunteered. And don't forget to look for your own situations where you can offer to work p/t or temp (without the agency) and let people "try the product". Sometimes that's a way in that works for all parties!

My best to you during this transition time, Lane. If you can, see it as a time of possibility, since you never know what you might discover! And please, stay in touch.

I've been laid off almost a month now. I do go to networking groups (it helps to see you are not alone). It is especially difficult now since so many people are unemployed. Even the temp agencies don't have work. I am considering taking a class online and volunteer work. I think the most important thing is to keep busy and not feel sorry for yourself. I have done volunteer work in the past and at least it gets you out with people.

Great comment, Muse. So true. Making work and work-based friendships our whole life can make the loss of a job even more devastating - especially if the friendships are really just work friendships. Balance is the key. I think you inspire me (once again)...this time to write about this in a post. Thanks!
