I just found a blog called Clue Wagon, hosted by Kerry Sandberg Scott, a woman with 14 years of corporate HR experience who has interviewed well over 4,000 people. Kerry tells it like it is. And sometimes like it should never be.
Take her story about Harold and his mom. Without giving it all away, Harold went on a job interview, didn’t get the job, and his mom wouldn’t take no for an answer. Definitely worth checking out on Kerry’s blog.
This reminds me of a wonderful episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, where Ray’s brother, Robert, goes for a job interview with the FBI while wearing his lucky suit. He might have had a chance, until his mother, Marie Barone (played to the hilt by Doris Roberts), decides to “help” her son:

Great interview, huh?
Now I’m not sure how common this is in real life. Hopefully, it’s mostly left to the world of sitcoms. But if you’re a mom and ever tempted to do something even close to what Harold’s or Robert’s moms did…best advice is DON’T!

Has your mom or any loved one ever tried to butt in where they weren’t wanted when it comes to your career? Have you ever been tempted to do this for one of your kids? Do you have a lucky suit?
To read Kerry’s original post:

With college students, this kind of parent is called a helicopter parent—always hovering around too close and not letting kids learn to solve their own problems.
Hah! Love that phrase. Especially appropriate because if the propellers get too close, someone (usually the kid) is gonna feel the pain!
Thanks, Terry B! Always nice to see you stop by.

This is a truly frightening prospect. I read the linked blog, and watched the video clip, (including the longest-lasting incredulous deadpan expression I’ve seen) and I do have one question (not having been a consumer of ELR before): Did Robert get the job?
Hahaha! A perfect question, Muse. I would expect no less from you. No, he didn’t get the job. A lesson for us all., I guess.
BTW…Robert is a great character. A sad sack that feels he is always being done to. And in this case…he was! But his mom says she did it for love, because she was afraid for him to have such a dangerous job. So it turns out she was trying to help him after all, but not in the way she at first made it look to be. A very complex relationship indeed – too complex for this humble venue. But definitely a fun show and one of the best interview segments I’ve ever seen on TV!

Wow, thanks for the mention. I’m amazed how often this happens too…I’ve dealt with probably 15-20 moms (or wives/girlfriends) in my career. Why do people EVER think that’s a good idea?

Hi Kerry! Thanks for the fun inspiration. Yeah…seriously…what could they possibly be thinking and should these people be allowed to vote or drive?
Welcome PB! Hahaha! No. He doesn’t get the job – even after his meddlesome mother makes an in-person appearance with home-baked cookies. But fear not…Robert and his mom find a moment of reconciliation. Sigh. I do so love happy endings.
