Sean Aiken is doing in one year what I’ve done over a large part of my career. He’s sampling jobs to see where his passion lies.
When he graduated college, his oh-so-smart dad told him it doesn’t matter what he does as long as he does something he is passionate about. (Lucky Sean!) So Sean decided to spend one year doing a different job EACH WEEK.
He’s a clever guy and has found a way to make this work for him financially and then some. As part of the adventure, he’s arranged for his salaries to be donated to charity and is also meeting as many folks as possible along the way.
He’s been a pizza maker, Hollywood producer, realtor, chiropractor, bartender, exterminator, and many more! Here is his website:
OK. I know not everyone can do this. Especially as we get older and take on personal responsibilities, such as dependents. But as someone who has spent my work life going after things that called to me, I can say the linear job path is not all it’s cracked up to be.
Not only was the job market much more flexible than anyone had ever led me to believe (although I must add I had good references from each experience), but all the different jobs and environments and people and resultant networking opportunities have helped me find my true calling, helping others with their own career choices! We learn something at every step of the process. Mostly about who we are.
As for Sean Aiken…take a look at his website and check out all the jobs he’s had so far. This experience is invaluable! In a way, I wish all college degrees required a year like this. Sean now has a better sense of not only what he is drawn to, but who he is beyond the boundaries of any particular job or label.
Congratulations on this inventive and oh so cool career move, Sean. And if anyone has a job for him or wants to give him a place to stay or simply meet him, you can contact him through his website: One Week Job.
Good luck finding your own dreams.
